Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups cooked rice white or brown
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Wooden spoon
  • Small bowl

Method

  1. Brown the beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it into crumbles. Cook for 5-7 minutes until no longer pink, then drain excess grease.
  2. Add aromatics by returning the skillet to heat and adding minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Make the sauce by whisking together brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and black pepper in a small bowl.
  4. Combine by pouring the sauce over the beef mixture. Stir well and simmer for 2-3 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Serve the beef over cooked rice and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control saltiness.
  • 80/20 ground beef provides the best flavor and moisture.
  • Fresh ginger can be replaced with 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger.
  • Leftovers store well for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
